유엔참전용사 후손과 국내 대학생 여러분!
반갑습니다. 국가보훈부 차관 이희완입니다.

먼저, 2024년 유엔참전용사 후손 교류캠프에 참가하기 위해 전세계 19개국에서 참가해주신 여러분을 진심으로 환영합니다.

저도 2002년 한일 월드컵 당시 제2연평해전에 참전했으며 부상을 입었습니다.

그래서 여러분들과의 만남은 더욱 의미가 있다고 생각합니다.

Good morning, descendants of UN veterans of the Korean War and students, I am Vice Minister of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, Lee Hee-wan.

Welcome to all of you, and especially to those of you who have flown from the 19 countries around the world to attend the 2024 Peace Camp for UN Korean War Veterans’ Descendants.

Back in 2002 during the Korea/Japan FIFA World Cup, I fought and was wounded in the 2nd Battle of Yeongpyeong, which makes it all the more meaningful to be here with you.

유엔참전용사 후손 교류캠프는 6·25전쟁으로 맺어진 소중한 인연을미래세대로 계승하고, 유엔참전국과 자유의 연대를 이어가기 위해2009년부터 국가보훈부 주관으로 시작되었으며,올해로 15회째를 맞고 있습니다.

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs initiated the Peace Camp in 2009, which marks the 15th year, to pass the valuable ties forged during the Korean War to future generations and continue the bonds of freedom and solidarity with the UN Sending States.

74년 전, 6·25전쟁으로 대한민국이 위기에 처했을 때 22개 유엔참전국은 도움의 손길을 내밀어 주었고, 198만 8천여 유엔참전용사들은 대한민국을 지켜냈습니다.

이들 중 4만여 명의 유엔참전용사들이 목숨을 잃었으며, 부상을 당하거나 실종 및 포로가 되신 분들이 11만 3천여 명에 달했습니다.

74 years ago, when the Republic of Korea was in great danger, the 22 UN Sending States extended us a helping hand and more than 1,988,000 UN veterans defended the Republic of Korea.

Of them, more than 40,000 veterans were sacrificed and 113,000 veterans were either wounded or captured or went missing in action.

당시 참전용사들은 지금 여러분의 나이에 참혹한 전쟁의 공포 속에서도대한민국과 세계의 자유와 평화를 수호한다는 사명감으로목숨을 건 투혼을 발휘하였습니다.

그 숭고한 헌신 위에서 오늘날 대한민국은 세계 10대 경제대국이자 반도체, K-문화, K-푸드 등 주요 분야에서 세계를 이끄는 국가로 성장했습니다.

Back then, veterans were young, about your age, but they were brave and fully committed to defending freedom and peace of the Republic of Korea and the world despite horrors and brutality of war.

Thanks to their noble sacrifice, today Republic of Korea is one of the 10th largest economies in the world and has become a leader in the semiconductor industry and big influence in the world with K-culture and K-food.

앞으로 여러분은 일주일 동안 6·25전쟁의 역사를 기억하고, 유엔참전용사들의 희생을 되새기며, 서로를 향한 자유의 연대를 다지게 될 것입니다.

이번 캠프가 지난 70여년 간 이어온 대한민국과 유엔참전국의 인연을더욱 끈끈한 우정으로 발전시켜나가는 소중한 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.

Over the next seven days, you will learn more about the Korean War and noble sacrifice of UN veterans of the Korean War and make yourself a pledge on solidarity for freedom.

I hope this camp will give you an opportunity to further promote the 70-year long friendship between the Republic of Korea and the UN Sending States.

캠프를 마친 후에도 여러분 한명 한명이 대한민국과 유엔참전국을 이어주는우정의 외교사절이 되어 주시기를 당부드립니다.

끝으로 이번 교류캠프가 여러분에게 소중한 추억이 되기를 바라며, 여러분 모두의 행복과 밝은 미래를 항상 응원하겠습니다.

I also hope that each and everyone of you will become and serve as ambassadors for friendship connecting the Republic of Korea and the Sending States even the Peace Camp is finished.

Lastly, I hope this camp will be remembered fondly and I wish you all happiness and bright future.
